This is the belt and suspenders method. It will take a while. Plan for it. Skip steps at your own risk.
  1. Stop ALL nonessential services and set to manual start
  2. Full Online Backup
  3. Stop Exchange and set all services to manual start
  4. Full Offline Backup (OS and Exchange Data) and make a new Emergency Repair Disk
  5. edbutil /d of PRIV, PUB, DIR
  6. Install NT SP6a (You HAVE tested this with ALL the software on your Exchange server right?)
  7. Install Exchange 5.5 - select safe upgrade if possible (though your backups give you the flexibility not to do this if you must).
  8. Install Exchange 5.5 SP4
  9. Reset Exchange services to automatic start
  10. Reset all nonessential services to automatic start
  11. Reboot once more for good measure
  12. Full Online Backup
  13. Full OS Backup and make a new Emergency Repair Disk
