NTBackup, which is updated by Exchange Server performs Online backups admirably. Scheduling and automation are covered in the Disaster Recovery White Papers.Veritas Backup Exec, or ArcServe, or ... - Be sure to buy the Exchange Agent too. Now, if all you need is basic backups, the version of NTBackup included with Exchange will do just fine. See the Disaster Recovery White Papers for automation instructions. For both these products, read the list for comments on bugs and version issues. They both work - really.
Note: Arcserve has some major issues that, if you pay attention, will not harm you too much.
- If you are backing up with Arcserve 6.5 and the MS Exchange Agent version 2, then only restore using the same versions. The new version of ArcserveIT 6.61 and the new version of the MS Exchange agent version 6.61 do not restore Exchange databases correctly that have been backed up with 6.5.
- It is also worth noting that if you are using version 2 of the MS Exchange Agent then it is recommended by Computer Associates to use build 57.
- There are other fixes recommended by CA listed below.
- The upgrade to Arcserve 6.61 from 6.5 is supposedly free. See http://www.cai.com/upgrade

Scanmail is the defacto standard among people on the list. There are many others including products from CA, NAI, Sybari and others still. An exhaustive (or is that exhausting?) discussion of the pros, cons, and cooking skills of each is in the Archives.Note: If you use file based scanning such as Norton Antivirus for NT 4.0, you should exclude the Exchange directories (x:\exchsrvr\*) from the scan.

- Crystal Reports from the BORK - Q173364 may be helpful in defining new reports. Seagate also has a commercial version of Crystal Reports and a more full featured analysis product called Seagate Info.
- MELIA
- Promodag
- NetIQ AppManager - I like this one for all the other stuff it does, but it is overkill for simple reports.
